How to Decide Wedding Colors in 2024

Overwhelmed about choosing your wedding colors? I was too!

I was so overwhelmed that I settled for a lot of things at the beginning of wedding planning. I didn’t make a mood board or a Pinterest board. I just started making decisions! Thankfully, I was able to adjust everything before the wedding day arrived and I loved how it turned out! But, I’m here to help you make this process a smooth one. So please, learn from my mistakes!

Here’s a few tips on how to decide wedding colors:

1.Hire a wedding planner

Wedding planners know what they are doing! Listen to them. Their job is to take your vision and make it come to life, while also offering advice in terms of aesthetic. Often times they will create a mood board for your day, so that there is a clear vision going forward with all of your planning.

2. Take inspiration from your wedding photographer

Typically, you will be able to see a wide variety of wedding color schemes on your photographer’s social media pages or website. This can be huge in helping decide your colors because you can also see how certain colors look with your photographer’s editing style. Maybe your photographer’s editing style really makes blues pop or maybe warmer tones are their thing. Let their work inspire you!

3. Create your own mood board

This is where I went horribly wrong when planing my wedding day. I had a vision in my head, but never put it anywhere to actually visualize! Once I created a mood board for my new vision, it was much easier to see how everything would actually look on the day of. I was able to create something I loved before it was too late! It was helpful to my florist, too, who had to totally change the whole plan we originally had (shoutout to The Cutting Garden)!

4. Use Pinterest

Pinterest is basically a mood board made easy. Start by pinning anything you like. Once you pin enough, you will be able to recognize patterns and the board will tell you what you’re leaning towards. Then, you can narrow in on those things to create a board full of wedding day goodness! Most vendors love Pinterest too, so you can show them what you like, whether it’s florals, dresses, makeup or your cake.

5. Don’t put your vision in a box

Remember, your wedding day doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s! I think it can be easy to look at bridal magazines and colors swatches and think your day has to look like something that’s already been done, but it doesn’t! Make your day whatever you want it to be. If you want lots of color and floral patterns, do it. If you want to wear a pink wedding dress and have everyone else in white, do it. As long as you and your partner love your wedding day vision, that’s all that matters!

Deciding your wedding colors is supposed to be fun! Use these tips to take some stress off the planning process, so that you can focus on being excited about your wedding vision coming to life. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
